The iOS 11 has introduced new app features, major design changes and a complete interface. Released on June 5th 2017, at Worldwide Developers Conference, the iOS 11 is a new generation of the iOS version. The update is generally a combination of the best and the most advanced operating system that brings subtle design alterations to the interface elements in the entire operating system. Now, the text is bolder and the apps including Phone and Calculator have a better new look while the Control Centre and the Lock screen are redesigned.
Include a range of settings
Even more, with the customizable Control Centre, you will have the option of including a range of settings. The Control Centre, which is not split across several screens, and the 3D Touch integration, which is already expanded, will help you do more without having to open your device’s ‘Setting’ app.
If you are worried about the Lock Screen feature, remember that the developer has merged it with the Notification Centre. Whenever you swipe down to access notifications, the Lock Screen will come up. Today view will be available with a single side swipe. After upgrading, you will no longer have a separate Notification Centre.
More intelligent Siri
Siri is now more intelligent and with more natural voice. After learning the user preferences, Siri syncs the data across several devices and therefore your personal assistant will easily learn more about you and anticipate exactly what you want. Siri also translates English into various languages such as Chinese, Spanish. Also, expect deeper Siri integration with the Apple Music.
Easier switching between apps
Speaking of the iPad, Apple has developed many features that have made it abler than the previous versions. The persistent Dock near the display’s bottom makes launching and switching between apps easier. Moreover, the new App Switcher, which is similar to the Mac’s Mission Control, allows the user to see everything they are working at without having to switch tabs. If you are an iPad Pro owner, the Apple Pencil will help you do more while the apps like Notes and Mail support inline drawing.
The new Drag and Drop Feature
With the Drag and Drop feature, you will drag content like links and images from one app and drop them to the other. On both the iPhone and iPad, there is a new Finder-style Files app to help users manage files. The Files lists every locally stored file, in apps, in iCloud Drive and in the third party cloud services such as Google Drive and Dropbox.
The iOS 11 has new keyboard features, which include the “Flick” option and one-handed keyboard for typing symbols and numbers on iPhone and iPad faster and easily. The many built-in Apple apps have newer feature and functionality updates.
Notes include document scanning and searchable handwriting, speed limit info, lane guidance for Maps gains, and indoor maps for airports and malls features. The Apple Music boasts an additional feature that allows users to share your music and see exactly what your friends are listening to. The iOS 11 Memories feature in the Photos is now smart. In the camera app, the Live Photos and Portrait Mode are now improved with better capabilities.
HomeKit supports speakers and there is a new AirPlay 2 protocol which includes multi-room functionality. The developer has expanded the ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature to include driving and muting notifications when a vehicle is moving. The ‘Messages’ app is also improved and features a new App Drawer which makes access to stickers and ‘Messages’ apps is easier. ‘Messages’ has also gained support for the new person-to-person Apple Pay feature which allows you to send money to family and friends through the iMessage. Your device will store the iMessages themselves in the iCloud app. The features will be available in the future iOS update. Videos and photos will also take lesser space on your device after adapting to the new HEVC and HEIF formats.
Completely revamped App Store
With the iOS 11, App Store is completely revamped. It now features to distinct sections for games and apps. The new ‘Today’ view feature displays new content on daily basis to help the user easily discover the new games and apps. Apple is introducing new APIs, including ARKit and CoreML, which will help apps do more. CoreML offers machine learning tools for developers while the ARKit allows developers to build more complex and detailed augmented reality features in all apps they create.
The September 26 iOS update
The iOS 11.0.1 released on 26th September is not only minor in scale but also focuses mainly on bug fixes. It has addressed the Exchange email server problem that prevented users from sending emails from Outlook, Exchange server email accounts and Office 365.
The design changes
Before the iOS 11 entered the market, people believed that they would see some changes in design. Even though we did not witness a complete overhaul to its design language, expect to see subtle design updates in the operating system.
The developer has refined several built-in apps with bolder fonts and darker lines – Apple has already moved from thin fonts that dominated since the iOS 7 release. Some apps like Calculator and Phone have new appearance with round buttons without borders and darker fonts.
Others like Calendar and Reminders have remained unchanged while some like the Podcasts, Messages and Apple News have smaller design tweaks. Vital UI elements such as the Lock Screen and Control Centre have highly improved with the new version.
iOS 11 compatibility
iOS 11 runs on every device that has an A7 chip or a higher standard. The devices include iPhone 5s and later versions, the iPad mini 2 and any later version, the iPad Air and all later versions. It will also work on every iPad Pro model and sixth-generation iPod touch.
The release date
The iOS 11 entered the market on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. That was after a beta testing period which spanned from June 2017 to September 2017. Now, you use your device in numerous ways such as sharing images, scanning tags and sending messages. If you are a developer, you should be ready to create more apps that will read tags to provide users with more information relating to their physical environment and real-world objects.
