Until now the only technological tool used to calm the passengers of a flight in danger of fatal accident, has been the deployment of an oxygen mask that detaches from a hatch in the upper part of the cabin. A tool to control the breathing of an anguished person, but not to save life in an inflight catastrophe. Are you afraid of airplanes? Keep reading! The new detachable capsule is presented that could save the lives of passengers during an air crash.

Although there are studies that show that traveling by plane is the safest form of transportation of all, the reality is that in a scenario of an aviation accident, passengers rarely survive. Which is curious as many of the designs for future aircraft look lighter, consume less fuel, have greater passenger capacity, or implement advanced entertainment systems, but are rarely sought to be safer.

Now, with the intention of having safer airplanes, which are able to save people in the event of an accident, a patented idea arises by the Ukrainian aviation engineer Tatarenko Vladimir Nikolaevich, who has thought of a system that would put us before a detachable cabin which could be expelled in mid-flight.

So, fears are about to change. A group of Slovenian developers registered the patent for an independent cabin prototype inside the aircraft, which when imminent danger would appear as a capsule at the rear and land without any problem with the aid of parachutes and small propellers, could even do it in the sea, since it would have incorporated a flotation system.

No doubt the aeronautics industry could generate a revolution in the safety systems of commercial flights, since knowing that there is an additional measure to guarantee the lives of passengers, beyond the traditionally known methods, generates a climate of confidence which would further stimulate the market for this type of transport.

For now it is unknown if the system will be used by the only existing airline with Slovenian capital Adria, which has only 13 aircraft, two of them were developed by Airbus, the remainder were manufactured by the Canadian company Bombardier. In none of the cases is there any development that involves the physical modification of the body of any aircraft, so it is still presumed to be a very interesting project and nothing more.

Aircraft with capsule to save passengers in a catastrophe

According to data from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in the last ten years, 8% of all air accidents have occurred during take-off, 21% at landing and 71% during flight. Within the analysis of the causes of the accidents, we have that 75% of the cases happened due to human factors.

Therefore, this aircraft is designed to operate the expulsion system either during takeoff, landing or in flight, this system would be conditioned to a fault that would endanger the flight situation, would be activated automatically and would not be necessary the intervention of the pilots.

Tatarenko has designed an aircraft in which the place enabled for the passengers and the engine would separate in case of failure. In this way, when the problem was detected, the passenger compartment would detach itself from the impellers of the apparatus while a large parachute would be deployed that would make the plane slowly descend to the ground. In addition, before landfall was reached, ‘airbag’ ‘floaters’ would swell to avoid a strong impact.

His idea was focused on the cockpit, which could get rid of the wings, engines, tail, and cockpit of the aircraft (which would leave their post before release) in the event of a breakdown.

Already in the air, the cabin becomes an immense capsule that falls slowly to earth supported by parachutes. Large floats would swell to cushion the blow on land or to allow flotation in case of falling into the sea. At the end of the downward trajectory, a series of engines would light up which would reduce the speed of the fall to zero.

According to Nikolaevich, 95% of aircraft users would be willing to pay between 15 and 20% more expensive tickets, in order to have access to a plane with a detachable cabin. Despite this, there are still some questions in the air, for example, what would happen to the pilots? And how would this design affect the structure of the aircraft? This is just a patent and of course there is no guarantee that we will see such an aircraft, but its creator is already in talks with the biggest aircraft manufacturers to sell their idea.

An ancestral concept to eliminate the fear of the airplanes

The first time that a passenger was expelled from a plane in danger was Russian Gamid Halidov, who created and patented a passenger rescue system in 2000 in case of danger. The idea of the Russian inventor was the construction of single-module modules that would be integrated into the fuselage of the aircraft and that would be released with the activation of a security mechanism.

“Surviving in an airplane crash is possible,” Tatarenko.

Once activated, the individual capsules are sealed and thrown to the passenger outside the plane, which would slowly fall to the ground with the use of a special parachute. The inventor Halidov said during an interview with RusNovosti that these salvage units could be made of polymer-based materials, being lighter and more resistant, without danger of being ignited and also floating.

Halidov said the capsules would be made from polymer materials, which are “modern and resistant, non-combustible and do not sink.” However, the idea of Halídov has been criticized seriously by his colleagues and no airline has implemented it.

In the past year 2015 the idea of an integrated capsule that was detached from the airplane in case of emergency was advanced. In January of the year 2016 presents a capsule devised by the Ukrainian engineer Vladimir Tatarenko.

To develop his invention, it is necessary to modify the way in which the aircraft are built and to use very light materials for the manufacture of the cabin of passengers.

Kevlar is a very strong and heat resistant artificial fiber used for bulletproof vests and is postulated as one of the materials that could be used for the creation of these life-saving aircraft.

“As engineers strive to build safer airplanes, statistics indicate that 80% of accidents are human errors. The idea of the ejection booth tries to lessen the consequences of those errors, “Tatarenko

In addition, the developer said that if his idea was fulfilled, each aircraft would add to its total weight between one and two tons more, a considerable weight but that would not impact on the fuel consumption, nor would it mean an unbeatable investment for aircraft manufacturers, Since the materials proposed are not the most expensive on the market.
