Estonian Starship Technologies Launches World’s First Robot Delivery Milton Keynes, In The UK

If you are a business owner, a business park worker, or studying, starship technologies delivery robot could come your way very soon – that follows the most recent deployment of the first commercial robot delivery services in the UK. This new delivery service might change the lives of Milton Keynes residents for the better. Starship Technologies plans to unleash many robots to help in delivery of packages to homes at any time of the day using six wheel robots.

About the six wheel autonomous delivery robot

The idea of building drones for use in packages delivery started as a joke, but for some reasons the punchline is yet to land. Amazon has several programs, which at least for now involve delivery of small packages, but their work has not yet yielded results. Now, it is the time to forget about all the insane logistics.

Package delivery services in the UK are about to change as a UK startup launches the global first robot parcel delivery service. Starship Technologies has a plan of unleashing hundreds of robots that will deliver different types of packages to the residents’ front doors. Their plan includes use of six wheeled robots that will move to any place around the area.

The startup started by testing the robots in London and then released them to several campuses of food delivery campuses in the United States. The users will get a personal address in place of their current home address to start receiving the robot-ferried packages. The packages will have to pass through Starship’s sorting hub before being assigned to the delivery robot.

The robots are ordered to carry the package to the front door of a user at the most convenient time. Moreover, the user is able to track the drone’s progress from the source company’s app. The users have to pay a monthly subscription fee of £7.99. Again, the company is now running a fleet of 20 delivery robots in Milton Keynes. The purpose of the robots in Milton Keynes is to help deliver food from cooperatives.

Why Starship Technologies chose Milton Keynes

The modern pavement and road infrastructures in Milton Keynes are robot friendly and that is the key reason why the company chose the town. The robots can autonomously navigate zebra crossings and road crossings using cameras, GPS and radar to checkout for the oncoming traffic. However, the startup company has employed several remote drivers to help if a robot encounters dangerous situations.

Bayer joined the Starship Company as the chief executive officer from Airbnb earlier in 2018. Up to now, the company has managed to raise around $25 million to expand the technology and ensure that it is beneficial to the residents.

The driverless robots are able to stick to a path and pavement and remain out of way for vehicles. For the pilot food delivery service, the user can deliver a pin on the map to have the drone deliver the package to the exact location. The robots move at a speed of 4mph and navigate around objects using radar technology and cameras. Skype cofounders, Janus Friis and Ahti Heinla started the Starship in 2014 and the headquarters are in San Francisco – they also have a base in London. The delivery robots have already covered 125,000 miles in 100 countries. The company has now joined Amazon, which for a long time has been testing drone delivery services.

How the robots work to deliver packages

After the package gets to the target depot, the resident receives a message notification. The six-wheeled robot can then get the package and deliver it to their home or office. The £7.99 covers unlimited number of deliveries each month. The service is expected to launch in the streets of San Francisco by the end of year 2018.

The robot resembles a box on wheels, but is able to navigate its way to an address effectively. The drone is able to work its way around people, animals and vehicles and can cross the road without causing any problems. That is due to its ultrasonic sensors, radar, GPS and nine cameras. The customers use personal codes sent to them through an offered app to unlock the robot.

Starship Technologies, the company behind these robots, is not the only company working to produce robots that can deliver packages to people’s home. However, they have gone an extra mile. Their robots have covered 125,000 miles in around 100 countries within one year.

On the downside, missed and late deliveries are very common with robot deliveries – but that is worth the additional costs and steps. Moreover, vandalized robots and stolen items are more likely to setback the project.

How the robots will help save the environment

In some cases, use of electric-powered robots instead of diesel-powered vans or trucks could significantly minimize energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases.

The electricity sector in the United States, for example, has rapidly transitioned to generation of power with few greenhouse gas emissions. The transportation is still highly powered by petroleum and it is the largest source of greenhouse gases in the country. It is known to contribute to around one-quarter of the transportation emissions.

Heavy and medium duty trucks – the vehicles that deliver packages to businesses, warehouses, and consumer’s homes contribute to around 415 million metric tons of carbon dioxide gas. With reduction of the number of packages delivered by road, we should expect reduced greenhouse gases emission.

The amount of energy a robot consumes depends on its weight, the batteries and the package it is carrying. Other factors include its speed and the wind conditions. A robot using a lithium-based battery would deliver a 17.6 pounds package to a home or business within a 2.5 miles distance and get back to its base. The whole process takes a short time.

Future robot delivery service

The logistical devices will effectively carry materials from the Starship base to the customer’s doorsteps. The main goal of Starship is to help deliver commodities to an intended location faster and to save the environment. The devices will also assist individuals who cannot carry heavy objects. You might also find them in your location very soon.
